SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEMS AND THE INFLUENCE OF BIOTIC/ABIOTIC FACTORS

Sustainable Ecosystems and the Influence of Biotic/Abiotic Factors

Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that is needed for survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on the natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, while also helping to fulfill the social and economic requirements of present and future generations.

In natural environments, the definition of sustainability is a property in which a process can be continued indefinitely without depleting the energy or material resources on which it depends. In essence, natural ecosystems are continually in a delicate balancing act to maintain equilibrium. With respect to population ecology, a sustainable population can be used to describe the dynamic relationship between a species and its environment. Numerous factors, both biotic and abiotic, can influence the success of a species in its natural environment over time. In this lab, you will learn about population ecology and its applications to better understand the influences affecting sustainable populations over time. You will also learn about prescribed fire and its application in environmental management to better understand fire dependent ecosystems in efforts to better maintain them sustainability.

Write a lab report of at least 1 page, and submit it to your classroom’s Submit Assignments area.

You are to write a 1-page Lab Report using the Scientific Method sections below. Your Pearson report is your data to support your report. Attach the Pearson report as part of your lab report results. The Pearson questions are to help you understand the topic and may be used in your report to support your findings.
